The main techniques of willow weaving include flat weaving, patterned weaving, drawn weaving, masonry weaving, and edge wrapping.
Flat knitting
This is the main type of work for weaving flat mats and foils. Its characteristic is the interweaving of longitude and latitude, interweaving and covering each other. It can be selected to press one, or selected to press two, selected to press two, or selected to press one, forming different cross woven patterns. The reed mat foil is first pressed into flat sheets and then woven, often using flat weaving techniques. Other types of sorghum skin weaving, bamboo strip weaving, and cattail grass weaving are also mainly flat weaving. Willow weaving is done in reverse with flat weaving, but not in many cases.
Twisted braid
Twisting and weaving is also a type of work characterized by warp and weft weaving and pressing. The difference between flat knitting and plain knitting is that in terms of warp knitting, the warp and weft of flat knitting are the same, while moving forward and weaving forward; And the pattern weaving first arranges the warp piles, which can be ropes, strips, bamboo poles, or even iron wires. Then, the woven strips (willows, locusts, and bamboo strips) cross and run up and down the warp piles, circulating around. After weaving, the surface is completely covered by weft knitting, without revealing warp strips. Twisted weaving requires the weft strips to be relatively soft and resilient, so it is often used for weaving cattail, willow, and mulberry strips.
Le Bian
Lebian is a traditional wicker weaving technique. Utensils made of woven materials are generally referred to as "tie goods". The method uses hemp rope as the warp and willow as the weft. The hemp rope crisscrosses between the willows and is threaded once, with the buckle tightened. Usually, the main part of the dustpan, fence, basket, willow bag, etc. seen in the folk are woven using this method. The edges of woven objects often require additional panels, handles, or frames to keep the edges neat and not scattered.
Bricklaying
Masonry weaving is one of the common types of traditional manual weaving. Objects made using the weaving process are generally referred to as "masonry goods". Its method is often used for the weaving of circular objects, which involves aggregating the woven materials into bundles and then using sturdy strips to thread these bundles together. The commonly used folk dunzi, rice baskets, word paper baskets, etc. are all made using this method.
Hemming
The auxiliary work of strip weaving is essential. Mainly used for edge and handle parts of strip weaving tools. The method often uses hard materials as the core, and on the outside of the core, soft strips (rattan bark, plastic tape, bamboo strip skin, etc.) are wrapped in a certain direction to fix it and achieve a surface decoration effect. Edge wrapping can be done with a single or multiple stripes, arranged neatly and with a simple and elegant effect. Multiple stripes can be made of various colored materials, and patterns can be woven during wrapping. It can be seen in the binding and connecting parts of wax pole furniture, willow weaving products, and screens.
